Avoid IRS Scams during Tax Time

Dean Bentle-Independent Agent

Unless you are living under a rock, you know that we are in tax season for the next 3 months. Each year we hear about IRS themed scams and this year is no exception.

Tax issues and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are favorite ploys used by thieves to get you to give up personal data or download malware to your personal computer. Kroll Fraud Solutions has been alerted to recent emails sent by scammers that use the topic line “Unreported/ Underreported Income (Fraud Application).” Recipients who clicked on the link were instructed to download a program, which was actually malware. One cybercrime-related blog reported that only one in 41 virus detection programs could detect the malware.

Although such scams can happen at any time during the year, these scams pick up during tax return filing season. Be on the lookout for scams related to faster refunds, for example.

The investigators at Kroll Fraud Solutions has compiled an alert concerning IRS themed scams. Click here to read the alert.
