Chan will host District 9 budget hearing Monday

District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan and City staff will host a community budget hearing at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at the Parkhills Baptist Church near US 281 and Loop 1604.
According to Chan, the proposed FY 2013 budget is balanced and would not require any tax increases. The $2.3 billion budget would, however, forego $30.1 million in property tax revenue through senior and disabled homestead exemptions and frozen city payments. “This illustrates our continued commitment to providing tax relief to those who have already given so much to our community,” writes Chan in a recent newsletter.
The proposed budget calls for additional police officers and firefighters and once again directs $4 million towards the City’s economic development efforts which, in 2012, help add more than 5,400 jobs to the local economy.

Two final public budget hearings will be held in the Council Chambers at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5. The City Council is expected to adopt the budget on Thursday, Sept. 13. The new fiscal year will begin Oct. 1.
