Principal announced for Johnson HS, first lady remembered

On July 9, 2007, the North East ISD Board of Trustees appointed Kristopher Wickerham the new principal of Claudia Taylor "Lady Bird" Johnson High School. Wickerham most recently served as director of the International School of the Americas (ISA) magnet program and brings with him 12 years of educational experience.

"I am honored to be the principal of an exciting new school and look forward to the responsibility of creating a vibrant high school community," said Wickerham. "Over the next year, I will work tirelessly to prepare for the school's opening in 2008."

One of Wickerham's early tasks will include establishing a student and parent committee to choose a mascot for Johnson High School. He will also oversee the hiring of the school's leadership team, which includes the assistant principals and counselors.

Perhaps one of the largest tasks that Wickerham and the district still face is the development of the school attendance boundaries. The district will conduct public meetings this fall to present possible boundary scenarios and gather community feedback. No boundary plans have been drawn at this time.

"I understand that there is quite a bit of discussion and speculation about the future boundaries of Johnson and Reagan high schools," said NEISD Superintendent Dr. Richard A. Middleton. "But the district has not created any maps as of yet. We are watching the continued housing development closely and know that Highway 281 may not be the east/west dividing line because that scenario would not provide enough relief for Reagan. Where those boundaries will be drawn will depend on housing projections and community input."

Reagan High School is currently at capacity and can no longer accept new students. The expected opening of Johnson in 2008 would relieve the overcrowding of the neighboring school. Unfortunately, the rainy spring and summer this year has wreaked havoc on construction schedules.

"The new high school is currently behind schedule because of this year's unusual weather," explained Middleton. "But North East is committed to getting the project back on track and on time.  We will do our best to work around this rain to get the school opened."

Johnson High School is named after Lady Bird Johnson, a Texas native and former first lady who is well known for her wildflower beautification projects. She passed away on July 11, 2007. To honor the first lady's environmental efforts, North East ISD planted wildflower seeds at the school's ground breaking ceremony last year.
