BexarMet On-Target for Self-Imposed June 30th Deadline
to Complete Massive Infrastructure Additions
Improvements to Impact Tens of Thousands of Residents and Businesses

(San Antonio, TX 5-21-07) The Bexar Metropolitan Water District (BexarMet) announced today that it is on-track to meet its self-imposed infrastructure repairs in both the far north and deep southern sectors of the utility’s District by June 30th.

“Everyone told us last fall we could not get these repairs done in time to meet our self-imposed June 30th deadline.  Today, I’m pleased to announce we will meet the deadline.  We may even beat it by several days,” stated BexarMet General Manager F. Gilbert Olivares.

Late last fall the BexarMet Board began taking action by allocating funds to address problems that have long-plagued the far north and deep southern sectors of the District in recent years.  In the past couple of months, the Board has allocated over ten million dollars ($10,000,000) to construct above ground storage tanks, lay over fifteen thousand feet (15,000 feet) of new transmission pipeline, purchase eight (8) well pumps and emergency generators and drill new wells.

“What our employees and contractors have accomplished in such a short period of time is remarkable.  The problems that past Boards and the past administration allowed to go ignored for so long is literally within a handful of weeks of being completely resolved.  Water delivery problems will become a thing of the past for these valued customers in our far north and deep southern sectors of our District,” Olivares said.

Olivares added that to meet the District’s self-imposed deadline, he moved his internal crews and outside contractors to three shifts, six days a week.   “Last fall, when we told our customers we would have these problems resolved by June 30th, we meant to keep our word.   And we will,” Olivares added.  Olivares went on to praise the work and dedication of his employees and contractors.  “These men and women are taking this task on as a personal goal, a personal mission.  They want us to meet our deadline as much as anyone else.  I’m so proud of our organization,” Olivares stated.
