Annual Dinner To Raise Money for Children with Developmental Disabilities; Funds Will Support the General Client Support Services of Respite Care of San Antonio, The Davidson Respite House Emergency Shelter, and Respite’s New Foster Placement Services

SAN ANTONIO - March 8, 2007 -- Respite Care of San Antonio will host its Annual Dinner and Fundraiser "A Celebration of Love and Children" on Thursday, March 22 starting at 6:00 p.m. To mark the event’s fifth anniversary and accommodate an expected 600 guests and presenting sponsor, AT&T, it will be staged at the historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown San Antonio. This year’s honorees are Linda and Ed Whitacre, who are being acknowledged for their individual and professional commitment to children. Additionally, the Landa Gardens Conservancy will be recognized for its work in creating a public/private partnership to renovate the grounds of the Landa Library.

The event’s purpose is to acknowledge those making a difference in the lives of children in need in this community while raising funds to offset Respite Care’s $20,000 to $22,000 per month operating deficit. This amount is the difference between reimbursement rates and the cost to provide specialized services to children with developmental disabilities and complex medical diagnoses, including those taken into state protective custody. The funds will also support Respite Care’s recently launched foster placement services for children with special and habilitative needs.

A silent auction will be staged during a reception prior to the dinner. Merchandise, services, entertainment, sports and travel packages from some of the finest stores and vendors will be on display and available to the highest bidder. Following the dinner, a live auction of items and services valued at $5,000 or more will be conducted by professional auctioneer, Jason Spence. Both auctions will provide a strong venue to present a company’s products to some of San Antonio’s most desirable consumers. For information on how to donate, please contact Bert Pfiester, executive director of Respite Care at (210) 737-1212. Auction forms are due via fax by 3/12 with items available for pick-up by Respite Care no later than 3/14.

"A Celebration of Love and Children" is a full evening including silent and live auctions, and a multiple course full-service dinner sponsored by Greg Kowalski, CEO of The RK Group. Chairing the event are Sherri Hernandez and Marilyn Taylor. Individual tickets are $200 each with sponsorships starting at $2,500 for a table of ten (bronze); $5,000 (gold); $10,000 (platinum); and $25,000 (presenting). For tickets and sponsorship information, contact Bert Pfiester at (210) 737-1212 or visit www.respitecaresa.org.

About Respite Care of San Antonio

Respite Care of San Antonio's mission is to strengthen and stabilize the family, prevent possible child abuse, and prevent or delay institutionalization. It was founded in 1987 with the goal of providing temporary respite services to families caring for a child with developmental disabilities. In 1997, it opened the Davidson Respite House Emergency Shelter, the state’s first and only agency licensed to provide temporary care for children with developmental disabilities or complex medical diagnoses who are taken into state protective custody. Today, in addition to the services at the Davidson Respite House Emergency Shelter, Respite Care operates a Child Development Center Daycare, Mothers Day Out, Family Day Out, and Parent’s Night Out services at locations throughout the city. The programs are available for children with developmental challenges, as well as their siblings. In late summer of 2006, Respite Care of San Antonio received licensing to serve as a foster placement agency for the children with special and habilitative needs who come to the Davidson Respite House Emergency Shelter in the state’s protective custody. After their stay of 90 to 120 days, if these children cannot return to their families or relatives, they enter the foster system. Respite Care will now be able to use the insights gained to secure the right foster home for the children, as well as training of the foster parent(s) and support through its services and programs. Since late 2001, Bert Pfiester has been its executive director, assuming the role from the founding executive director.
